Yes, all our dust extraction systems can be supplied fully ATEX certified. We advise you on the correct zoning and ensure that the entire system — including filters, motors and pipework — complies with applicable laws and regulations.
An installation designed for use in potentially explosive environments. Complies with European ATEX guidelines.
Yes. Mobile ATEX extraction units offer a safe and flexible solution for targeted removal of hazardous substances – even across changing locations or applications.
Finely distributed industrial dust from metals such as aluminum or magnesium, organic substances such as flour, sugar or wood, as well as coal dust, plastic dust and color pigments are potentially explosive and therefore a danger. A dust explosion can occur as soon as the dust in the air reaches a certain concentration and an ignition source is present. Preventing a dust explosion starts with the use of powerful extraction systems.
What are the regulations regarding ATEX dust extraction?
ATEX stands for AtmoSphère eXplosible: an explosive environment. ATEX locations are locations where atmospheric conditions can cause an explosion. According to the ATEX 153 Directive (1999/92/EC), employers have been required to draw up and maintain an explosion protection document since 1 July 2006. Under the right conditions, particulate matter, powders, chips or vapors can lead to an explosive atmosphere: a mixture of flammable dust or vapour with air in an enclosed or partially enclosed space. In this context, safe extraction is not an extra, but a requirement. The two core guidelines within the European regulations are:
• ATEX 137 (99/92/EC): for the employer/user organization: minimum requirements for protecting employees in explosive environments.
• ATEX 114 (2014/34/EU): for equipment manufacturers: requirements for equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres.
For you as a controller, this means that you not only need to have appropriate extraction, but must be able to demonstrate that the equipment is certified and that the zone layout is correct. For example, dust zones 20, 21, or 22.
What makes Kiekens' ATEX dust extraction special?
At Kiekens, we think along from the start. From risk analysis to maintenance. Not a standard solution, but a sophisticated system that fits perfectly with your ATEX zone and production process.
1. Fully integrated system
Our ATEX solutions consist of one complete solution: source extraction, explosion-proof piping, flameproof filters, fans in accordance with EN 14986, safe dust removal and customized maintenance. We have all specialists in-house, so that means you have a fixed point of contact and no third parties to work with.
2. ATEX-enabled components
Our dust extraction systems and vacuum cleaners consist of components that are specifically suitable for use in explosive environments. Examples include anti-static hoses, conductive containers, spark-proof motors, explosion-proof control cabinets and fans that comply with EN 14986. The filter housings are also pressure- and shock-resistant and can be equipped with explosion protection such as rupture discs, check valves or flame arresters. Each component has been chosen to limit risks and prevent sparking or ignition.
3. ATEX Vacuum cleaner for local applications
For activities where central extraction is not practical, we also provide mobile and stationary ATEX vacuum cleaners, such as the Ergonomic. These are used for local extraction of machines, cleaning floors or safely vacuuming flammable dust. Fully certified and tailored to the fabric type, zone layout and work situation. Ideal for environments with temporary setups, changing production or specific hotspots where risks arise.
4. At home in all markets
We have experience in various sectors: food (flour, sugar dust), metalworking (aluminum chips, chips), chemicals & pharma (flammable gases/vapors) and recycling (metal dust, plastic particles) and more, all with explosion risks. Our approach is first a risk analysis and emission measurement, then we select the appropriate zone, equipment and maintenance strategy. This way, we tailor the system exactly to your situation.

How do I prevent an explosion?
You can prevent an explosion by ensuring that the three required elements are never present at the same time: fuel (dust or gas), oxygen (air) and an ignition source (e.g. a spark or hot engine). In practice, this means:
• Source extraction to keep dust concentrations below the explosion limit level (LEL)
• Explosion-proof equipment, such as spark-proof motors, conductive hoses, and flameproof filters
• Zone layout according to ATEX guidelines, so that you take the right protection measures for each area
• Install explosion protection: rupture discs, flame arresters, check valves, or explosion suppression
• Regular maintenance and inspection to prevent wear or defects on inflammation-sensitive parts
Only if you structurally prevent these three factors from occurring at the same time can you prevent explosion risks. The right extraction system plays a crucial role in this.
