Central dust extraction systems

Central extraction systems are used at locations where dust, welding fumes, fumes, chips or particulate matter are released during production processes. They filter the polluted air directly at the source and thus contribute to a healthy and safe working environment.

Applications

In contrast to separate extraction units, a central system provides the extraction of entire production areas, entire halls or even multiple floors. This results in efficient operation, lower noise levels and an energy-optimized process.

What are central extraction systems? The basics of extraction technology

Central extraction systems are permanently installed systems that capture harmful substances directly at the point of origin, remove them via a branched ducting system and clean them in one central filter unit.

A powerful extraction unit generates a negative pressure, creating an airflow that draws in emissions such as dust, smoke, vapors and gases and reliably transports them to the central installation.

Typical structure of a central extraction system

  • Extraction elements such as extraction arms or covers directly at the workplace
  • Fan for creating negative pressure
  • Piping system that connects workplaces to the central unit
  • Central filter system for separating dust, chips, smoke and other harmful substances
  • Controlled exhaust of air to the outside or return of filtered air; depending on dust type and legislation

Central or mobile extraction — what's right for your business?

Mobile industrial vacuum cleaners or small extraction systems are suitable for occasional work or low-load workplaces.
But with multiple machines, high dust volumes or continuous operation, they quickly reach their limits.

Here, the central extraction solution shows its advantages: more power, lower energy consumption, less maintenance and more space in the workplace.

The biggest differences between central and mobile extractors

  • Power & air volume: central installations provide higher volume flows and more stable negative pressure over long ducts.
  • Efficiency: one large extraction unit is more energy efficient than several small devices.
  • Maintenance: Maintaining one central filter unit is easier than many separate devices.
  • Space: fewer devices in the workplace = more space = better working conditions.
  • Flexibility: mobile units can be used more flexibly, central installations are more powerful but fixed.

Why central extraction systems?

Better air quality & healthier workplaces

In production environments, fine dust particles, welding fumes or chemical vapors are created that end up in the breathing air without extraction. This leads to health risks, pollution and extra cleaning work.

Kiekens installations absorb these contaminants directly and filter them accurately, with HEPA filters if required. This keeps the air clean, the environment hygienic and you can effortlessly comply with regulations.

Result: healthier employees and a more pleasant indoor climate.

Higher productivity at lower costs

A clean working environment prevents disruptions, machine contamination and premature wear.

Modern systems automatically adjust their power based on the number of active workstations. This reduces energy consumption, noise and wear.

In many cases, the investment pays off in a few years by:

  • Fewer failures and downtime
  • Less cleaning
  • Longer lifespan of machines
  • Lower maintenance costs

Welding fume extraction

Welding processes produce ultra-fine particles and gases that are barely visible to the naked eye but pose significant risks — so-called welding fumes. These particles often contain metal oxides, ozone or nitrogen oxides that can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause damage there.

With regular and prolonged exposure, this can lead to an increased risk of respiratory diseases, inflammation and allergic reactions.

Effective welding fume extraction prevents this by capturing harmful substances directly at the source, even before they can spread into the ambient air. In addition, good extraction contributes to the quality of the welding: less smoke ensures better visibility, resulting in more accurate work and a more consistent end result.

Filter systems that keep the air clean

  • Cartridge filters: large filter surface, compact, ideal for particulate matter.
  • Hose filters: robust, suitable for large volumes of dust, easy to clean.
  • Cyclones: separate coarse dust by centrifugal force, relieving the main filter.
  • HEPA filters: extremely high filtration, essential in chemicals, pharma and electronics, among others.

Planning, engineering and sizing — the right Kiekens solution for your production

Analysis of production processes and requirements

Each Kiekens customized solution starts with a thorough analysis. Together, we identify all relevant factors: materials, types of dust, explosion risks, the number of workplaces, shifts and the architectural situation.

This analysis forms the basis for a solution that seamlessly matches your production process.

Dimensioning capacity, air volume and ducting system

Based on this data, Kiekens determines the required extraction capacity, the correct filter system and the optimal configuration of the ducting system. The best installation location for the installation is also determined.

The goal is clear: stable processes, healthy employees and an energy-efficient system without blockages or loss of extraction capacity.

Flexibility and expandability of systems

Kiekens' central extraction systems are designed in a modular way, so that they can easily be adapted to future changes in production, machines or building layout.

Ducts, extraction points and filter units can easily be expanded or modified, so that your investment remains sustainable and future-proof.

Safe handling of explosive substances and gases

In many industries, flammable substances and gases are a real risk of explosion. That is why Kiekens builds extraction systems in accordance with ATEX guidelines.

This includes the use of appropriate safety components, correct grounding and pressure relief systems. In this way, risks are minimized already in the design phase.

Standards, guidelines and occupational safety

Extraction systems must comply with various laws and regulations, such as TRGS 528, the Hazardous Substances Ordinance, the Working Conditions Decree and DGUV Rule 109-002.

These standards set requirements for exposure limits and workplace safety, among other things. Kiekens supports compliance with these regulations and thus contributes to a safe and compliant work environment.

Use, maintenance and longevity

Periodic maintenance and inspections are essential for reliable operation. This includes:

  • Inspection and replacement of filter elements
  • Cleaning piping systems
  • Inspection of controls and safety devices
  • Control of mechanical components

Kiekens supports you in this and helps to prevent downtime and unexpected failures.
